Gmail Account?
Posted by Gordon Smith

So, everyone seems to be getting Gmail accounts via invitations from existing users. People are selling invitations on eBay for $2 a pop, so they aren't exactly a scarce commodity. Yahoo! is now offering 100MB in storage ... not quite the 1GB offered by Gmail, but how many people really need that much storage? Anyway, I am thinking about getting a Gmail account and wondering if it is worth the hassle. I already have four email accounts, and I am not sure I need another. Any users out there who can offer some perspective?

I like Gmail for two main reasons (other than the fact that it has a lot of storage space) -

1) I do a lot of replying back and forth between coauthors and other coworkers. Gmail's conversation thread style of email storage makes these kinds of exchange much easier to handle - and more fun! It's almost like instant messaging, only you can store the messages indefinitely.

2) Google's spam blocker is the best I've ever seen. I forwarded all of my other email accounts to my Gmail account and I reduced the amount of spam I get significantly. By forwarding my other accounts to Gmail I've also cut down on the amount of time I spend checking email.

There are a lots of people selling GMail invites from $2 to $20. Some offer GMail invites for logo designs, feeding the poor - the list goes on.

I got 5 invites and of course people in my office had to bully me into submission.

Come on, look at it with a little perspective - 1GB is offered by Rediffmail; Y! offers 100MB.

If this makes sense business-wise, how long before somebody offers 1 GB too?

For my use, I can't imagine ever filling up my 100MB allotment from Yahoo! I've minimal needs apparently. After several years, I've never used more than 3MB.
