Jeremy has the scoop on blogging at Fortune 500 companies. He lists 40 companies "who are blogging internally, externally, in management, etc." I have not read many corporate blogs, so I went in search of them.
* If you didn't know about Robert Scoble's Scobleizer blog, you should. This is the king of the corporate blogs because it has an "authentic" feel.
* The infrequently updated official Google Blog comes in second in a Google search for "google blog," right behind the infrequently updated and unofficial "Google Weblog." Note that the infrequently updated and official Yahoo Search Blog appears first in a Google search for "yahoo blog," ahead of the Unofficial Yahoo Weblog.
* The GM Fast Lane Blog is surprisingly cool, with fairly regular posts by Bob Lutz and lots of comments.
* The Dell-Linux Blog is written in some language that is not native to me.
* Many other companies appear not to have official external blogs, but have inspired blogs from consumers, such as The Disney Blog, Starbucks Gossip, and The Unofficial Apple Weblog.
I
am surprised that Jeremy's list is so short, and more surprised that
most of the companies on the list do not have external blogs. Or, if
they do have external blogs, that those blogs are so hard to find. Then
again, most companies will have a hard time attracting readers for a
corporate blog. Consumer products companies -- especially technology
companies -- are are the best candidates for external blogs, but even
these have been slow to enter the fray.
