Although Disney is hoping for positive reaction to the new CEO, Robert Iger, this may be a tough week for Disney. The cover story of this week's Entertainment Weekly is the rise and fall of Miramax, the independent film distributor that Disney bought at its peak. Miramax was really Bob and Harvey Weinstein, who are now leaving Disney at the expiration of their employment contracts. Miramax brought Disney Oscar wins for The English Patient, Chicago, and Shakespeare in Love and over 200 nominations. Now, with the Weinsteins gone and Disney basically owning the rights to the name "Miramax" (ironically an amalgam of the Weinsteins' parents' names), the article seems to congratulate Eisner on returning Disney to an era of maybe 2 Oscar nominations a year, one for Best Song and one for Best Animated Picture. However, now that the Disney-Pixar alliance may have ended, Disney may not even be able to count on that.
Of course, as any parent of small children knows, The Incredibles, possibly the last Disney-Pixar product, debuts on DVD today.

Something puzzled me: why would Disney's shares rise so much today? They made the move everyone expected by naming Iger as CEO, then they get this bad news about Miramax. After some searching, I may have found the impetus for the price increase (from Bloomberg): "The comments by Iger, who will replace Michael Eisner as the company's CEO, signal Disney will take a more conciliatory tone in talks with Pixar, the maker of 'Finding Nemo' that cut off negotiations in January, 2004, amid tension between Eisner and Jobs."

Well, if you want to hear bad press about Disney you might be interested in the above website where former employees are sounding off about how they have been abused.
