Christine, I accessed the essay without a subscription, and I am glad that I did. The lesson you learned is one that I was forced to learn early in my teaching career. Unless you remind yourself frequently, it's easy to forget that the people who are victims in the wacky cases we read -- or people very much like them -- are sitting (or have relatives sitting) in our classes. It's actually a great lesson in empathy.
