Continuing our Swedish lessons, this entry's word is Ost. Cheese! Lund has a small cheese shop called Bengtson's, and we visited yesterday. At the recommendation of one of our hosts, we purchased some Västerbotten cheese (which Bengtson's spelled Wästerbotten). Västerbotten is a county in northern Sweden, and this cheese reminds me of Dubliner cheese, though a bit more cumbly. We also purchased some Swedish cheddar (I didn't realize that Swedes made cheddar), which my son intends to use for macaroni and cheese later this week.

Nit-picky, to be sure, but I once had a Swedish professor named Bengtson (a common last name there, apparently), and he grew very upset when he was repeatedly called Bengston.

Steve, Thanks for pointing that out. I have corrected the spelling in the post. This was particularly embarrassing in light of the fact that the person who recommended Bengtson's to me has the first name of Bengt!

Nice to see that you're enjoying the summer
in my home town. OK, so it's not exactly my home town, it's just the town where my extended family has lived for generations. I'm born and raised in Eslov (three stops on those funny-looking purple trains down by the train station). I'm sure you've realized by now that Malmo, Lund, and Eslov are pretty much all part of the same metropolitan area. Kinda like Cleveland. :)
If you're into football at all there are teams in both Lund and Malmo. The season is going on, it's pretty much like watching decent high-school teams play.
Anyway, what I was actually going to say was that saying that Vasterbotten is a county is not quite correct. I think the closest equivalent would be province.
At any rate, enjoy Sweden. Love the blog!

Thanks, Henric. I have been watching the Confederations Cup a bit on television, but I am not much of a soccer fan. As for Vasterbotton, I wasn't sure that country was right, either, but the website I linked to called it that.

Actually, when I said football I meant football - pads, helmet and all.
If you get a chance, take the family back across the bridge to Copenhagen and go to Tivoli. Make sure you stay until it starts getting dark and they turn on the lights.
Also make sure you take a trip to Stockholm to see the royal palace, the old city and all that.
Man, I feel like a tour guide. I'm just telling you all the fun things I'd rather be doing than being stuck here. :)
