OK, this post is not as meaty as my co-bloggers' posts this weekend, but I want to warn people. Diet Coke with Splenda tastes nasty. Remember Tab? Remember how you had never heard the word "aftertaste" and it probably didn't exist until Tab was invented? DCW/S is worse. A colleague who will remain nameless (ok, Scott M.) told me it was amazing. But Scott doesn't like Diet Coke. DCW/S is Diet Coke for people who don't like Diet Coke, but maybe liked Tab.
I did not taste DC until I was in college.
I remember the exact day that I bought a Big Gulp for 49 cents the summer between my first and second years of college. It was a sunny day, and I was "laying out," which is not a salacious term, but the act of basking in the sun hoping that your skin will turn a different color and never once thinking that you would get skin cancer. I was reading Time magazine. Ah, memories. Since then, I have been on and off "the sauce," as my husband calls it. Ambrosia of the Gods, that's what I call it. Sometimes I drink caffeine-free DC, which is ok. I like DC from a fountain better than a bottle, and a bottle better than a can. I don't know if it has saccharin, which supposedly kills rats in the laboratory, or Nutrasweet, which supposedly causes some sort of memory loss. I really don't like rats, and I have a few memories I could do without, so I'll stick with regular DC and leave DCW/S alone.

I had to give up diet coke years ago because the nutrasweet was causing quite serious short-term memory loss. I haven't tried the splenda version, but I used to love TAB, even with the aftertaste. Even so, it's been so long since I exchanged diet soda for the healthier club soda with lemon or lime that I doubt I'll ever go back. Try club soda with a touch of your favorite juice. It's so much more refreshing than diet soda.

Tab... wow, haven't had that in a while! :) I do like the Diet Coke with Splenda, but it doesn't taste like Diet Coke to me, it's like a whole new drink. Diet Coke has to have that "bite" which the Splenda stuff just doesn't have.

I am not a huge soda-pop drinker, which has made me even more confused with the different *flavors of Coke.
Yesterday, I tried my Ma's Coke Zero, and surprisingly, it tasted much more like *real coke than diet coke. Coke Zero uses ?aspartame? for a sweetner.
This page lists the whole coke family.

Um...
I don't eat or drink anything with nutrasweet, but I do chew a lot of sugarless gum which contains it. I also tend to chew it compulsively when I study. Is that, like, defeating my efforts? I hadn't heard about that memory-loss thing before. Or maybe I had, and I've just forgotten...

Hello - my name is Mary Anne Mitchell and I use Splenda all the time. It has really helped me to lose a lot of weight because it has no calories, unlike sugar. I'm worried though, because I hear people saying bad things about Splenda that I have found are not true. They are lies instead by the sugar industry because people like Splenda more than sugar (duh!). I thought that since you like Splenda just as much as I do, you might want to include this information on your website about the Sugar industry and how it is putting out these lies about Splenda to try and get Splenda banned.
The following timeline regarding the intruiging relationship between Dr. Stuart Fischer and the Sugar Association openly attacking Splenda should open your eyes to the coordinated effort to destroy this product that so many of us low-carbers love and appreciate for helping us break our sugar addiction:
The media advisory sent to promote Dr. Fischer lists Qorvis Communications as the contact. Of note, Qorvis is the PR firm representing the Sugar Association. They are the group behind www.truthaboutsplenda.com, press releases, press conferences, etc. They appear to have a very coordinated campaign against Splenda. (my emphasis)

How about this? It seems the plot behind the scenes from the sugar industry and its allies has been unfolding for nearly eight months in an all-out assault against the makers of Splenda. With such calculated steps being taken by the sugar industry to protect themselves from economic failure because their product is a major contributer in the obesity epidemic in this country, don't think they won't do everything within their means to bring an end to their primary competion. Even if that means trumping up false allegations against a good product like Splenda, they'll do it and never think twice about it.
This is such a shame and it must be stopped. Contact your Congressman today and ask him to help stop this harassment by the sugar lobby against Splenda. If you are livin' la vida low-carb and believe Splenda has played an important role in your weight loss and improved health, then you should stand up and make your voice heard. Do it not only for the sake of your health, but also the health of all those who are being needlessly scared about the alleged "dangers" of Splenda. I contend sugar is a lot more dangerous for you than Splenda will ever be. Our voice must be heard on this issue!

I had been drinking Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi for over 20 years, consuming about 32 ounces of it per day. Finally, 2 years ago, I started having terrible migraine headaches.
The frequency became so bad, (5-7 migraines oer month) that I kept a journal of everything I ate and drank to search for a "trigger" to the migraines.
You Guessed It! As soon as I stopped taking in ASPARTAME or SPLENDA or Nutra Sweet (Sucralose is yet another term used for it), the Migraines subsided!

The "Only" reason Diet Coke is now using Splenda (they know it's nasty) is because Diet Coke/ Coca-cola is facing so many lawsuites from Nutrasweet. Nutra-sweet / aspertame has been proven to envoke seizures, amongst many other problems. Coca-cola would never change the worlds best selling diet soft-drink unless there was a SERIOUS Problem. Put in "Diet Coke, side effects" in Google or Diet Coke, epilepsy, you'll see.

honestly spenda scares me so I won't even try the new diet coke. I have noticed a sensitivity to Splenda that I don't have to other artificial sweeteners. I develop SEVERE migraines that do not subside for a day or so. Not worth saving a new calories in my book...

My personal experience with Splenda
I have adopted the low carbohydrate lifestyle and found out about the dangers of aspartame so avoid it though I have had no discernable side effects apart from some 'brain fog'... cloudy thinking and from it making my tongue swell. Someone suggested Splenda to me so I purchased a box of it plus some tablets for my decaf coffee as well as purchasing diet cola flavoured with Splenda.
Almost immediately, I found myself doing stupid things like driving through red lights without even thinking about it. I became moody, irritable and withdrawn. I also experienced continual headaches ranging from moderate to quite severe. My doctor also told me I had irritable bowel syndrome as I had almost round-the-clock diarrhoea.
Whenever I had eaten anything with Splenda (Sucralose) as the sweetening agent, I begin experiencing severe anxiety and panic attacks, rapid and irregular heartbeat and a massive rise in blood pressure to 170/130. I went off to my doctor and she prescribed me tranquillisers for my anxiety and panic attacks and referred me to the coronary department of the hospital for a tape test because of ectopic and irregular heartbeat. I was suspicious about the origin of my symptoms, so once my heart rate returned to normal I sat down and had another small bowl of berries and yoghurt with several teaspoons of Splenda sprinkled on it... Within fifteen minutes I started having an irregular heart beat, and feelings of severe anxiety and a panic attack. Not satisfied with this.. I waited until the next day and then drank a can of Splenda-sweetened diet cola, a small bowl of berries sprinkled with Splenda. Within 20 minutes the irregular heartbeat began, I experienced depression and anxiety and my blood pressure rose. I had also been waking up about 5 - 6 times a night. There was enough for me to get suspicious about my reaction to Splenda so I went online and did a web search on sucralose side effects and found enough anecdotal reports by people reporting exactly the same symptoms I've been experiencing, to make me go and throw out my Splenda and replace it with Stevia.
Since this time, my diarrhoea has gone, my heart rate is fine and my blood pressure is normal. My mental acuity rose considerably so I now think clearly and I have had no further repeats of the anxiety and panic attacks and I am once again sleeping through the night.

Please do not quit making the regular Diet
Coke. The Splenda is awful. I will have to
quit drinking cokes if you leave the Splenda
in it. As long as you have both thats fine.
I love Diet Coke, but not with the Splenda in it.

anyone ever think of drinking water intead of nasty soda? Crazy I know for most people. And how about not shoving artificial anything into your body. If you want to lose weight, try portion control, not eating crap and pushing yourself away from the table every now and then. Splenda may have helped you lose weight, but so would water genius and you wouldn't have cancer in 10 years. Not all that hard to figure out.
