Gmail Failure
Posted by Christine Hurt

For submitting my gambling paper, I set up a gmail account (christinehurt at gmail dot com).  I had not received any messages, even "we got it messages" there since 8/17.  This morning, I sent myself two test emails, and only one appeared.  I sent an email to gmail, but received an auto-reply telling me that they cannot respond to every email, so I should look on their chat board.  Yes, on their chatboard two people had the same problem, but no one had the answer.  If anyone can help me de-bug my gmail, I would appreciate it.  And, if any editor wants to discuss my paper, please use my primary email (christine.hurt at marquette dot com).  Grrr.

I'm curious: Why set up a separate account in the first place?

Long story. I sent the article out, then went on a week long trip with my kids to my parents' house in Lubbock, Texas, where they only have dial-up Internet. Because my hopes were flying high, I knew that I would have offers flying over the email. The Marquette outlook takes about 45 minutes to load remotely over dial-up, but Gmail is a lot faster. In fact, I can load gmail on a Blackberry quicker. So, I thought gmail would be easier to access while on vacation.

I have had gmail for about a year now. And I have found that it often takes a long time to receive e-mails. I have had people simultaneously dispatch e-mails to my yahoo and gmail accounts and found that when attachments are involved the yahoo account still gets the mail almost immediately but it can take 30 minutes to receive it on gmail! With no attachments, they are comparable. So basically, if it is urgent w/attachments send it to something other than gmail. Others I know with gmail have experienced the same problem.
