I'm So Glad that Marquette is Not on This List
Posted by Christine Hurt

Just as Marquette has voted once and for all to be the Marquette Golden Eagles instead of the Marquette Warriors, the NCAA has thrown down the gauntlet to colleges with nicknames deemed to be "abusive or hostile" to Native Americans.  These colleges, unless they change their nicknames, will not be allowed to host an NCAA post-season tournament or participate in one in uniforms that are "abusive or hostile."

Tournament regular FSU plans on protesting the new policy and pursuing "all legal avenues."  The Chronicle of Higher Ed. (sub. only) lists these colleges as ones the NCAA has targeted:

  • Alcorn State University (Braves)
  • Arkansas State University, main campus (Indians)
  • Bradley University (Braves)
  • Carthage College (Redmen)
  • Catawba College (Indians)
  • Central Michigan University (Chippewas)
  • Chowan College (Braves)
  • Florida State University (Seminoles)
  • Indiana University of Pennsylvania (Indians)
  • McMurry University (Indians)
  • Midwestern State University (Indians)
  • Mississippi College (Choctaws)
  • Newberry College (Indians)
  • Southeastern Oklahoma State University (Savages)
  • University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Illini)
  • University of Louisiana at Monroe (Indians)
  • University of North Dakota (Fighting Sioux)
  • University of Utah (Utes)

Looking at the list, I would definitely say "the Southeastern Oklahoma State Savages" seems like a bad idea.  Not as bad as the "Carthage Redmen," but pretty bad.

If "Illini" is offensive, why isn't the state of "Illinois"?

Far be it from me to question the judgment of the NCAA, which has given us gems like the BCS and the Continental Tire Bowl, but the this bothers me for a few reasons.

Apparently, FSU received permission from the governing body of the Seminole Tribe to use the mascot (though the NCAA reports that other Seminole tribes were not supportive). It is difficult to imagine that the logo in this instance satisfies the "hostile and abusive" criteria under those conditions. And if the local Seminole tribe's permission does not count in the analysis, why would the NCAA allow an exception to this rule for the North Carolina-Pembroke Braves because the school has a traditionally high population of American Indians? If those are indeed the facts, that decision doesn't appear to make a lot of sense.

If the NCAA is inclined to rid college sports of hostile and abusive logos, why just post-season play?

And as Danny notes, if Illini is verboten, then FSU will have to move out of Tallahassee. Maybe Marquette will have to move out of Milwaukee.

The ironic thing about the Southeastern Oklahoma University Savages is that SEO is in the heart of Native America (the Oklahoma state motto). In fact, it is located in the center of many reservations including the Cherokee, Quapaw, and many others. I live near this area and have not heard word one of complaint about the mascot name. Does Silence=Acceptance?

I look forward to the renaming of Utah as the State of Deseret.

I'm wondering how this affects Larry "Tribe."

The word Oklahoma is native so I guess we will have to change it to "state that looks like a sauce pan."

I believe Central Michigan has the blessing of the Chippewa, so are we going to tell the Indians that don't have the right to speak for themselves?

And the NCAA, now there is a big bundle of integrity.
