AALS Annual Meeting in New Orleans?
Posted by Gordon Smith

New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin has called for "total evacuation" of his city, which will "not be functional for two or three months." After watching CNN tonight, I think this looks very optimistic.

In my podcast yesterday, I noted that law professors were scheduled to descend on New Orleans in January, but at the time I was functioning on information available prior to the levee breaks. Now, the prospects for our January conference are more uncertain. This is from the website of the Association of American Law Schools:

New Orleans is the site of the 2006 AALS Annual Meeting and we are closely monitoring the situation. With four months to go before the meeting is scheduled to take place, we are in contact with the New Orleans Convention Hotels and are assessing the situation on a frequent basis. Please continue to refer to this page for updates. At this juncture, we continue to plan that the Annual Meeting will be held in New Orleans as scheduled. We will keep meeting registrants and exhibitors updated as we receive information from the city should there be any change.

Even after the levees are repaired and the city is drained, so much will be left to do. I am not counting on New Orleans by January.
