I'm on my way to Washington DC this afternoon, a quick trip to visit with the folks at American University's Center for Social Media in connection with an ongoing project to reconcile the interests of documentary filmmakers -- and those who watch documentary films -- with contemporary copyright law. The title of the project is "Untold Stories: Creative Consequences of the Rights Clearance Culture for Documentary Filmmakers," and among other things it's a sort of ethnographic exercise. Figuring out what how copyright law should operate in the context of documentarians requires understanding a bit of how documentarians operate in the first place. More on this, I hope, next week.
