In the past few weeks, some have pointed out that radical groups like to claim that Katrina came to hit some activity that they hate most, whether it's the U.S. in general, drinking, homosexuality, or jazz bands. See PrawfsBlawg post here on why followers like to claim God as a punisher (when s/he is punishing people we don't like. Well, in reading the Houston Chronicle this week, I have to tell any white supremacist group out there that is rejoicing that God loves them because s/he wiped out African-American communities in NO that they can't rejoice too much after Rita. This picture from the Chronicle shows houses in Vidor, Texas that were destroyed by Rita. Vidor is the town featured in the December 1993 Texas Monthly with the picture of the hooded KKK member on the cover, a town that for years had a sign at the city limits proclaiming it the whitest town. In fact, in the article, which I can't find online, residents claimed at the time that all residents were white. Vidor's KKK history is profiled in a recent documentary, Least of My Brothers.
