As expected, John Roberts has been confirmed. The final vote was 78-22, and Roberts will be sworn in later today. The Democrats played that about right, I think, not giving Roberts a free pass, but not waging an all-out war.
Now the big question is who will be nominated to replace Justice O'Connor? Harriet Meirs? According to the NYT, "One name that was the source of enormous speculation in Washington legal and political circles was Harriet E. Miers, the White House counsel, who is a leader in the search for Justice O'Connor's successor."
When will Bush announce? I expect to hear tomorrow.

I noticed on Ann's blog that among the 20-ish Dems who voted no were both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. I looked on Obama's website, but there was no press release with an explanation. I would be interested to hear his analysis. Although, on his website were links to legislation that he is authoring with HRC and a picture of him with Bill Clinton. I am a Democrat, and I would vote for either HRC or Obama, but I can't help noting that the Clinton machine seems to have picked up one more.
