A Clue
Posted by Gordon Smith

President Bush is not the most subtle person around, but surely he can sense a problem when he compares these two reactions to the Miers nomination:

Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski (D-Md.): "But I'm shocked at the sexism and double standard coming out of the far right.  All of a sudden they're saying that a woman who was able to become head of the Texas Bar Association isn't qualified.  They're saying a woman who was one of the first to head up a major law firm with over 400 lawyers doesn't have intellectual heft."

Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.): "Conservatives do not have confidence she has a well-formed judicial philosophy, and they are afraid she might drift and be a part of the activist group like Justice Souter has. She will need to articulate a vision of the Constitution and the role of a judge that is sound."

If you are President Bush and you find yourself being defended by Barbara Mikulski and questioned by Jeff Sessions, don't you have to wonder whether you did the right thing?
