That's from Arlen Specter.
It's pretty clear that the White House has been taken off guard by the backlash. President Bush tries to reassure, but all he can offer is his personal endorsement and the prospect of hearings, where the country will see that "Harriet Miers is a woman of intelligence, strength and conviction."
If President Bush thinks this is merely a PR problem, he will continue to be surprised by the strength of the opposition. At some point during the past week, as people gathered information about Harriet Miers, they flipped from cautious skepticism to open hostility. Those who find themselves in this latter camp want something that appears not to be not available: evidence from her substantial career in the law that Harriet Miers is "in the mold of Clarence Thomas and Antonin Scalia."
We are told that the "White House [is] working to assemble a dossier that would back up its case about Ms. Miers' record of accomplishment, her legal qualifications and her conservative credentials." Unfortunately, this sort of information is not readily at hand.
