Have you noticed Harriet Miers' supporters saying this a lot lately? It is code, of course, for "stop criticizing her!" Bad idea.
If the confirmation hearings are a candidate's "interview with America," as Ted Kennedy claims, the vetting process that is happening right now is essential to identifying the questions we want to ask.
Perhaps more importantly, this process sets the bar for the confirmation hearings. John Roberts' credentials and experience were so impressive that he skipped over the bar, but Harriet Miers will need a mini-trampoline.

I completely agree. In the past few days "wait for the hearings" has clearly become the main talking point among Miers' supporters. To me it is reminiscent of the North Carolina four corners offense. Instead of trying to score points with the undecided, the administration now seems to think that it can simply run out the clock and still get the 51 votes it needs. I do think it is better than the pitifully transparent attempt employed by the administration to use her religion to persuade conservatives.

Nice points, Doug. I like the analogy to NC. I remember those days before the shot clock, and that is a pretty good metaphor for the Administration's latest strategy. They are trying anything at this point.
