While Steve Bainbridge laments mission statements as ranging from "the fatuous to the vacuous," I have been elected by my sadistic colleagues to serve a term on our Law School APC (which, I think, stands for "Academic Planning Committee"). Part of my task is to assist in the development of our self-study report in preparation for the ABA's site visit this spring.
Creating the self-study report is a painful process. This is my second time through it, and though I generally have a bias in favor of doing rather than planning to do, my experience has been that strategic planning has some positive externalities. As one of Steve's commenters observes, it's not so much the words on the page as the process of getting the words on the page that is valuable.
In any event, I got a chuckle out of the following cartoon from today's W$J:

Thanks, Eric. I assume that you have done this sort of thing before.

Gordon, surely you've read "Goldman on Admissions"? It's a page turner. It made "Hurt, et al. on Centers of Excellence" seem tawdry by comparison. I can't wait until it's time to strategically plan again!
