Blue Star!
Posted by Gordon Smith

In my first eBay auction, I purchased a mobile phone vehicle power charger for $.01. That was on December 23, 2003. I just received notice that my account has earned a blue star!

If you are an eBay aficionado, you will recognize the star system as part of eBay's method of developing reputational constraints on buyers and sellers. After each transaction, both parties are encouraged to leave feedback on their counterparties. Each time a new eBay member leaves positive feedback, you get a point. Negative feedback reduces your score.

My account has 57 positive feedback entries (25 from sellers and 32 from buyers) from 51 different eBay members. No negative feedback. Almost all of this activity has happened in the past two months, since my wife took over my account and started buying for Christmas and selling every  unused but marketable item in our house. She is quick to pay and to ship, which earns her rave reviews like "Excellent eBayer A+++++++++++" and "Super Fast!!!!!"

That feedback system was a stroke of genius.

One of the reasons I've not started eBaying was that I thought it might be difficult to enter the market since I wouldn't have any reputational information. Would people really want to do business with someone with no record of how they do business? As a consumer I might like the reputation information, but it does seem like a significant barrier to entry.
