Yesterday, my daughter and I joined a crowd of people to watch an exhibition from the U.S. women's gymnastics team in West Allis, Wisconsin. These women dominated the world championship in November, with 17 year-old Chellsie Memmel winning the best all-around. Ms. Memmel is from West Allis, so she performed in front of a hometown crowd.
The autograph line was about 45 minutes long, but we withstood it. I saw the investment of time as a sort of wager. Should Ms. Memmel remain strong and uninjured for the next two years, we may have an autographed poster of an Olympic medalist. I couldn't help but notice the vagaries of amateur gymnastics. Had she been the world champion in an Olympic year, then her exhibition tour would have included large stadiums across the country, not the West Allis high school gym. But, we felt lucky to meet her.

Not a vaguary, few people care about the sport of gymnastics outside of the Olympics and the governing body of US gymnastics doesn't try very hard to change that.

But Gymnastics is the most watched sport during the Olympics, whether people really know the who/what details is a different story.
