Whenever I leave home for more than a short trip, I try to bring something home for my wife and children. What's more, I try to choose gifts with regional significance. Often, that means branded sportswear. Members of my family have shirts, sweatshirts, shorts, etc. from all over the world, including lots of university gear. (Fortunately, we spend a lot of time in sportwear!)
Ordinarily, I have no qualms about buying university gear, but I paused several times before picking up some Harvard gear over the lunch break today. Why? Does a Harvard sweatshirt evoke different reactions from wearing a Michigan State sweatshirt? Does the Harvard gear give the appearance that you are trying to hard?
Not in Madison. I hope.

I've felt that way. I want my daughter (who's 1 now) to wear baby Stanford clothes but not baby Harvard clothes. I admit to not being able to explain the difference, but there's something... maybe it's the consistent portrayals of Harvard as snooty in the movies.

Gordon: I have a Harvard rain coat and T-shirt that I quite like. My problem with Harvard gear is that I always associate college sweatshirts with college football and Harvard sucks. There is something a little bit pathetic about Harvard gear that has any sort of a sports reference...
