I usually leave the football blogging to Gordon, but surely we must take note when Illinois defeats a #1 ranked team for the first time in over 50 years by playing an almost perfect game of football! Great job!
An inside joke in our house is the "transitive property of football," which refers to the quite-frequent complaint of a former acquaintance around bowl time that "[My team] should not be ranked [1 + X] because they clobbered the #1 team in the regular season!" By the transitive property of football, his team obviously should have been ranked #1.
Therefore, by the transitive property of football, Illinois is #1!!

Congrats to Illinois. As a Badger fan, I felt better after this one.
If you follow the Big Ten, you know that the Badgers have been decimated by injuries. They have lost to Illinois, Penn State, and Ohio State, all on the road. Then on Saturday, the Badgers manhandled an also-depleted Michigan team. So riddle me this, rankings gurus: how does Wisconsin end up ranked below Michigan -- which, need I remind you, lost to App State in the first game of the season -- in both major polls?
Oh well, that will correct itself next week, when Michigan loses to Ohio State. Still ...
Gordon,
Perhaps because Michigan handed it to Penn State, and Penn State flat embarassed Wisconsin.
I'm a Badger fan, but they just aren't that good this year. Even before their injuries, they had a very porous run D. I doubt they could have held a healthy Mike Hart below 50 yards. They certainly couldn't hold down Ohio State's starting back for 4 quarters.
9-3 won't be a bad record going into the bowl game, but I'm already looking at next year. If only they could get Tyler Donovan to come back and throw to that young receiving corps...
