Cuil
Posted by David Zaring

Have you tried Google's big new competitor yet?  I ran a few searches, and was surprised at the different stuff I got.  Cuil claims it searches a lot more pages than Google, and relies a lot less on popularity (and, as Mike Dorf notes, it's really unclear that the latter thing is a good thing).  I note, however that that Cuil has adopted the idea of the super simple search page.  We like competition at the Glom, and so we wish the best to Cuil and its campaign to find a place next to a corporation that is both smart and a poster child for network effects.  I gather that the backers of Cuil (and Mahalo, and so on), think that those effects ain't nothing but numbers.

David,

So I am wondering: when you test a new search engine, what do you search? I search my name "D. Gordon Smith." Do most people do that?

Anyway, Cuil did not find me anywhere. They think Senator Gordon Smith is the only Gordon Smith worth highlighting. He even gets face time on Gordon Smith Guitars, even though he has nothing to do with them. Meanwhile, Google not only found me, but they found me in my current location.

Only one idiosyncratic search, but it looks like a big thumbs down on Cuil.

I confess that I looked me up as well. And CFIUS. Bit hard to follow the results, actually, but again, they were different (as they are for you!). Can't imagine adopting the program, though.
