Jayne Barnard was kind enough to host me at William & Mary last week as part of the 2009-10 Herbert V. Kelly, Sr., Teaching Program. It was a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with many longtime friends, including Jayne, Alan Meese, and Nate Oman, and I enjoyed the chance to share some thoughts on my own development as a teacher in my presentation entitled, "Teaching and Learning in the Same Classroom."
The motivation for the title was my epiphany, several years ago, that good student evaluations were not necessarily correlated with meaningful learning. As I have reflected on this subject over the past several years, my teaching has changed dramatically, and the changes have not always been smooth. I have made some mistakes, but I am confident that I am now on a better path than I was several years ago. If you would like to read about some of the changes, you can find many of them in our Teaching archive.
