Monitoring is a key feature of modern finance. The idea is simple: many problems in relationships are caused by one party to the relationship being insufficiently attentive to relationship goals, and monitoring is a method of improving incentives to perform well (for what should be obvious reasons). Earlier this week, I saw the perfect monitoring system with my own eyes.
It happened at the Deparatment of Motor Vehicles, when I signed on as the parent supervisor for my daughter's driving permit. The exact moment of my epipheny came when the DMV clerk asked for my social security number so that he could link my driving record to hers. Suddenly, finding myself invested in her progress, I became much more motivated to helping her become a great (and safe) driver.
After two days of practice on mostly empty country roads, my daughter seems to be holding her own. Thanks for asking!
