It is not over yet, but the numbers look bleak for Tom Daschle. This is not a statement about Kerry or the Democratic Party, but a reminder that politics is local. One of the decisive symbolic issues in that campaign was Daschle's decision to pursue a homestead tax exemption for his DC residence:
When Tom and Linda Daschle purchased their $2 million home in Washington, D.C., in April 2003, they filed for the District's "homestead deduction" — a tax break that saved the Daschles a whopping $288 in property taxes last year.Unfortunately for the South Dakota senator, however, the homestead exemption is applicable only to properties that serve as primary places of residence. By signing the application form for the deduction, and thereby claiming eligibility for the tax break, Daschle identified the mansion at 2830 Foxhall Road NW as his primary residence.
I have mixed reactions. Daschle is one of my least favorite national political figures, and I am happy to see him retired from the Senate. But does this mean that he becomes a pundit?
