Some commentators (for example, Cokie Roberts just now) are asserting that this is "just like Florida" in 2000, but the numbers being reported from Ohio do not add up to a lasting controversy. John Edwards invoked the need to count every vote, and that was the sensible thing to say. I would expect Bush to do the same if roles were reversed. Nevertheless, if the numbers hold, the provisional ballots in Ohio cannot possibly bridge the gap between Bush and Kerry.
The big fact -- the one that is indisputable -- is that Bush has attracted 51% of the popular vote. This is a margin of almost four million votes! This for a president whose approval ratings were consistently below 50%, and who by all accounts lost the debates. Incredible! And it is (almost) inconceivable that he could lose the electoral college with that result.
By the way, I am not sure how anyone can sleep through this. We will not know the final results of the election tonight, but things are still happening! The latest is that President Bush is still planning to address his supporters tonight (this morning).
