Garden State, The Movie

While I'm annoying people in the blogosphere, I'll go ahead and alienate all the people who seem to love Garden State. We rented the movie, and I couldn't help thinking that maybe this wasn't the movie that everyone liked so much. But then I realized that there is a method to my madness (a literary reference that is going to be important in a moment). I hate movies (and plays) about young men who are wandering through life because they have been disillusioned about the motivations and characters of others. These young men are aimless and choose not to make decisions because they are sort of paralyzed by their angst. Hamlet, Catcher in the Rye, The Graduate, and now Garden State. At least the latter work does have the character wake up out of his fog at the end to have a meaningful conversation with his father and embrace life, which is good.

Maybe I can't empathize with these characters because of my female genetic code. (If that doesn't alienate readers. . . .)
