Ads by Google
Posted by Gordon Smith

Blog advertising is annoying, and in some instances counterproductive.

My colleague Ann Althouse values her blog as a space that she controls. She wrote recently: "Each blog is a place unto itself, where a writer establishes a tone and a voice. As long as you keep the comments function off, you control your own space." She failed to mention the need to control the advertising. Ann doesn't use Google Adspace, but Fred Wilson does, and I was struck by the top advertisement that I saw on his page this afternoon ...

For me the lesson is obvious: do not let other people control your space, even if they are willing to pay you for the privilege.
