I told myself that I was going to not post anymore on the Shiavo case, but I was just reading the CNN story reporting that the SCOTUS had denied the parents' appeal when this paragraph struck me:
A Roman Catholic monsignor who is one of the parents' spiritual advisers accompanied the family, and said afterward that although Terri Schiavo's tongue was still moist, they applied some Vaseline to it.
And then, I was floored. This is Holy Week, and today is Maundy Thursday. Tomorrow, Good Friday, represents the day that Jesus was crucified. John 19 (NRSV) reads:
After this, when Jesus knew that all was now finished, he said (in order to fulfill the scripture), ‘I am thirsty.’ A jar full of sour wine was standing there. So they put a sponge full of the wine on a branch of hyssop and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the wine, he said, ‘It is finished.’ Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
I have become so cynical that I don't know if this is the media trying to manipulate readers or a sign that I should be called into action. If I figure it out, I'll let you know. (I hope that this written medium does not make me sound flippant because I am honestly floored.)
