Exactly two years ago today, I fired up Blogger for the first time and started Venturpreneur, which had the subtitle "A blog on entrepreneurship." Here are my first attempts at blogging. This was my first post:
When Linus Torvalds first sent Linux into cyberspace, his email message told everyone that it was an experiment, nothing big or fancy. While I have no illusions about the power of Venturpreneur to change the world on the scale that Linux is now operating, this blog is also an experiment. Just a tinker toy that may turn into something valuable, given enough time.
I was a very sporadic blogger on Blogger, just playing with the format and trying to find my niche. After transitioning to Movable Type, I got more serious, and inspired by Steve Bainbridge and Ann Althouse, I greatly expanded the range of "acceptable" topics on the blog. That's when I started blogging about cheese. (My first cheese post began, "I love cheese.") About a year after first launching, I changed the subtitle to add "law" and "other esoterica," though I was still trying to focus on entrepreneurship. It wasn't long before "entrepreneurship" morphed into "business," and soon I dropped the subtitle altogether.
All of that seems so long ago. When I launched Conglomerate with Christine last November, it was much more than just a name change for me. In retrospect, I think the formation of Conglomerate was the point at which the "experiment" that I spoke of in my first post had ceased and real blogging began. It's been great fun for the last two years, but I am much more excited about the next two. Thanks to all who have decided to hop on for the ride.
