Although many are calling Jennifer Wilbanks the "runaway bride," her situation reminds me of a different Julia Roberts not-so-romantic-not-so-comedy, Sleeping With the Enemy. Like the character in that movie, Ms. Wilbanks disappears by taking a Greyhound bus across country. People are focusing on her bizarre actions, but what made her act that way? I've come to believe that crazy women are made, not born.
I can envision a scenario where Ms. Wilbanks wants to call off this wedding, for small or large reasons, but feels trapped either because her parents have forked out tens of thousands of nonrefundable dollars or perhaps because of pressure from her fiance. If she calls off the wedding, she even has to move out of the house, as they live together. She decides to disappear. Once she gets where she is going, she realizes that her hometown is in the middle of a manhunt, and her mom is on television. (This didn't happen in the movie!) She has to figure out a way to let her parents know she is alive without angering them even more (I'm out the cost of a wedding and now the cost of a manhunt!).
Maybe we should create a bride protection program, similar to witness protection.
