I returned yesterday from the Law & Society Conference, which was held in Las Vegas. I've never been to Vegas, and I was not excited to go there. The first thing that hit me in Vegas was the ubiquitousness of gambling. Video slot machines and video poker machines are everywhere. When I say "everywhere," I mean in the convenience stores, grocery stores, and every other conceivable business establishment. As I exited the jetway from my plane to the Vegas airport, the first thing I saw were slot machines in the airport. I was a little thrown. The next morning, I stopped in a convenience store for a soda on my way to the conference. More gaming machines. In the convenience store was a group of guys who seemed like day construction workers. In Texas, this is a normal early morning scene -- construction guys loading up on drinks and breakfast before heading out to the job. Only these guys were also getting a few games of video slots in as well.
I did enjoy myself at the conference, though. I had some great conversations with old friends, met new friends, met cyberfriends in person, and presented my paper and got great feedback. The last night I was there, I went with guest-blogger Joan Heminway, Marleen O'Connor and Lynne Dallas to see Mamma Mia. I loved it! I bought the CD and have been singing at the top of my lungs ever since.
