I hate to admit that I look at the WSJ daily polls. The outcomes are always wacky and counterintuitive. The demographics of the people who participate in the daily WSJ polls must be completely different from the picture I have in my mind of WSJ readers. Anyway, today's question is what issue that could come before the court is most important to you? The options were abortion, civil rights, church/state issues, tort reform, defendant's rights, or something else. No stance is implied, so both NARAL supporters and Right-to-Life supporters might click "abortion."
The number one and two choices at 26% and 25%, respectively are civil rights and tort reform. I'm most interested in the tort reform question. Conceivably, the consitutionality under the U.S. constitution of a damage cap or other reform could go to the Supreme Court, but for the most part, tort reform is a state law issue. In the comments, someone posts that he chose tort reform because it is the one issue that could affect the economy. He then went on to say that he is also concerned that the federal government has gotten too big, and that the states should have more power. Yet, he wants the Supreme Court to get involved in tort reform. I have to think about that for awhile.
