In June I blogged about the "Hard Luck Minnesota Twins," who had won 15 of 17 games but managed to gain only one game on the Detroit Tigers and Chicago White Sox. Tonight, after an improbable run relying on several rookie pitchers, the Twins clinched a playoff birth, eliminating the White Sox. In addition, the Twins gained another half game on the Tigers and stand only one game behind in the loss column to both the Tigers and the Yankees for the best record in the American League. The Oakland A's have gotten a lot of attention for playing Moneyball, but the Twins have done at least as much on their trim budget. They play an exciting brand of baseball, and the playoffs will be better because they are in.
