Suicide and Financial Crises
Posted by Gordon Smith

I have no idea what causes some people, like David Kellerman, to choose suicide over other options. The New York Times is blaming job stress. The thing is, lots of people have stressful jobs, but only a small number of them choose suicide.

Whatever the causes, suicides like this, usually involving people we have never heard of before they take their own lives, make us wonder what other nefarious things are happening beyond our sight. For most of us, Freddie Mac was a fairly distant memory, pushed aside by seemingly larger and more pressing troubles at GM, Citi, and Treasury.

Now the spotlight is back on Freddie and Fannie. A reminder, as if we needed another one, that we are still far from done with this financial crisis.
