Jerry Buchmeyer, one of those titanic district court judges who took over prisons, housing authorities, and still found time to write witty columns for legal magazines, has passed. I note that after appearing before him on behalf of the government, I found my way into academia; my co-counsel did the same (he's at Harvard).  They don't make them like Buchmeyer any more, and he certainly kept federal employees like me on our toes for many years.
