Wi-Fi as Public Infrastructure

Almost a year ago, I blogged about Utah's decision to construct a fiber-optic data network connecting 17 Utah cities. My point was that such projects are one way in which cities and regions are competing for people and businesses. Fred at A VC has been blogging (here and here) about public WiFi development in Philadelphia and San Francisco. This is such an obvious and relatively cheap thing to do, and it distinguishes these cities as economic progressives. Madison, are you listening?

UPDATE: Thanks to Tony McGrath for pointing me to articles (here and here) about Mayor Dave Cieslewicz's support for wireless in Madison.
